From Kanye to Sondheim

The past few months have been rather disenchanting when it comes to the field of endeavor that I'm pursuing at college. So I've been trying to rediscover what it was that made me want to study theatre, drama, acting, musical theatre, music composition, directing, and the crazy compilation of all the above. Before I explain these attempts at rediscovery, let me go a little further in detail as to why I've slowly become more and more frustrated with theatre arts and, sadly enough, the people involved.

I've met a lot of amazing people while at Tisch, Steinhardt, NYU, and New York in general. The extraordinary amount of talent that exists in these people is indescribable and I truly am grateful to know them. Some of the writers, directors, singers, designers, and actors that I've met really do have so many things to offer to the world. I guess my issues really involved some of the people I know who actively engage in the world of musical theatre, specifically.

The words "musical theatre" often imply the images of jazz hands, flaming homosexuals, and dancing cats. And yes, those things do in fact exist in musical theatre sometimes. But it can also function in ways that can lift a person up. Looking at musicals such as "Adding Machine", "Show Boat", and "Shuffling Along" demonstrate how musical theatre can truly marry the ideologies of entertainment and mental stimulation towards an ethically desired goal. And there were courageous actors and writers involved who made those productions possible. But why did they do it? Why do certain actors pursue musical theatre?
I don't know about back then, but nowadays it seems to be a near depressing conversation. I've sat in on hundreds of people auditioning for various musicals. Whenever I'm casting a show, or involved with casting a show, I get the past the fact that the person can sing a high note. But I want to know what kind of a person they are, and how they would be to work with. And I do this because I find more and more musical theatre actors wanting to be in musicals for mere self-gratification. And that self-gratification derives from the desire to belt the highest note and perform the fiercest dance combination. Don't get me wrong. Applause is great. We all love it, and everybody should be given the chance to receive applause when deserved (who knows when that is). But if applause is all that a person is aiming for, then is there any selfless aspect to that desire? 

I guess narcissism is the idea I'm shooting for. The goal to show off versus contribute proves to be extremely frustrating. I'm not an entirely innocent party. There are times when I'm playing a song and I add an unnecessary ostinato pattern to prove what my hands can do on a piano. But I'll ride the high horse and say I don't do that too often. At least I try not to. There is a community of musical theatre artists in Manhattan. And many of them are lovely beautiful people. And the majority of them seem to want to prove themselves as worthy of performing. 

I went to a new musical theatre writers workshop a couple months ago and there was a reception afterwards with cocktails and wine specials and whatnot. There also was an open mic stage with an accompanist ready to play any song from any musical, if you had your sheet music with you. While I was trying to talk to other writers and catch up with old friends, there were singers on stage wailing out songs that nobody was paying attention to. Ironically enough, the people who weren't paying attention to the folks on stage would later get onstage themselves and belt out their own tunes with the reciprocated disinterested response. 

Musical theatre writers are not totally off the hook either. Many up and coming writers I know are on a similar construct of writing to show off how witty and catchy they can be. However, what this produces is a lot of new works all sounding relatively similar. Instead of sounding like themselves, they are sounding like each other. And these are brilliant people! So why should they be writing material that isn't indicative of who they are as individuals? That's why my heroes are the composers who write like nobody else, because they're writing from the heart, not the insecurity.

Let me emphasize a very important point: this is a pure generalization that is NOT true for many, many writers and actors. All of this speculation is derived from certain people that I've been surrounded by in recent months. I have many wonderful collaborators as directors, actors, writers, designers, composers, etc... who do not possess these qualities. However, they seem to be rare finds. And THAT is what is so disheartening. If this is my chosen field of profession, I don't want to be surrounded by people that motivate me to deliberately avoid their praise. 

Theatre shouldn't be so selfish to the point where a spotlight and a standing ovation are the only sought after goals. It should be giving and welcoming to everyone and anyone who is willing to listen, watch, and experience.

So... let's get to that other point. How have I been cheering myself up about this? Quite a few things actually. 

1. My piano. I've been writing a lot since I've come home. I love my baby grand piano so much. I love it when we have alone time (dirty, right?) I'm working on another show now, and the sounds we are producing together are incredible. And so much fun. Therapeutic. Clears the mind, and easily enough, the soul. 

2. Recent experiences with Stephen Sondheim. I've always known the man could write a good show. I know he's highly respected by, well, everyone involved with musical theater. But it wasn't until last April when I EXPERIENCED the value this man possesses. When I saw the production of "Anyone Can Whistle" at the City Center, my eyes were opened to a whole new concept of who this man is. Stephen Sondheim is smart, and people will call him courageous without any weight to the word. But my god, "Whistle" taught me what it meant to be a courageous writer. True courage means writing something that you fully believe in with all of your heart, putting it out there for the whole world to see, and risk the endless ridicule by those who disagree. And holy hell, that show received ridicule. But I saw what he was saying. During the song "Everybody Says Don't", emotion swelled within me and it proved to me that I can do miracles just by saying "Do" (my experience with this song would take a whole other blog post, so I'll just leave it alone for now). Another very recent experience was seeing "A Little Night Music". And I had a TRUE Sondheim experience. I knew nothing of the show before I saw it, everyone told me the show is brilliant (like most of his shows). But I didn't think that immediately when the show ended. It starred the most inspirational actor alive (at least for me) and by the end of the show, I felt slightly confused. It caught me off-guard. I didn't think right away about how perfect the show was, but rather thinking more along the lines of what the show was about. And it resonated within me for days. I couldn't get the damn production out of my mind with so many questions about life, love, romance, and the cost of falling in love. And only THEN did I say to myself, "Fuck, that's a great show!" And THAT sums up Stephen Sondheim's brilliance. Intelligence, heart, and courage. Lots of courage. He who dares to do something different and specific to him.

3. Surrounding myself with people who DON'T carry the above mentioned attitudes! They exist. And they're awesome. I can't wait to work with some of them next semester. I can't wait to work with some of them after graduation. They also make amazing friends. 

4. Lots of good books, tv, and movies! Just this week alone I've seen The Fighter, I Love You Phillip Morris, Black Swan, The Chronicles of Narnia (not great, but beautiful to watch), and tomorrow I'm seeing Tron in IMAX and The King's Speech. Movies can be so inspiring. 

5. Drives to the beach. They make anyone feel better. 

6. Overall, remembering that there are writers and actors who truly dare to do something different. Entertainment is great. Thought-provoking is delectable. Emotions are a wonder. And experience is irreplaceable. Melding them all together make for something perfect in its own extraordinary way. And there are so many people who want to make that happen. 

I know this blog post looks incredibly judgmental, and let's face it, it kind of is. But I don't mean to scorn people who want praise and recognition for their work. I mean, I definitely want praise and recognition for the work that I do. Fame and glory can be wonderful things. But they're also dangerous, because they can make us forget the other aspects that prove to be more pertinent. Every profession in the world has its community of narcissism. I'm learning that now. And more importantly, I'm learning how to avoid it and still do what I have set out to do since the beginning. It's more than possible. 

As I type this, my iTunes shuffle switched from Kanye to Sondheim. I'm going to take that as a good omen.

Hello blog. It's been a while.

The past month has been an absolute whirlwind. From opening and closing a few shows, getting the flu, food poisoning, finals, papers, visiting the nieces in Maryland, and of course the finalizing of the "Reporting Live" album at Dubway Studios, it's hard to even know where to begin. But now I'm in sunny South Florida. 75 degree weather. A palm tree Christmas, and considering my parents are selling the house in a few months, I couldn't be more content to be in Florida. And the best part is that it ACTUALLY gets kind of cold at night! And I'm talking about weather in the low 50's, maybe even 40's! And for Florida, that's amazing.

After a very strange semester, I'm able to pop in the CD for "Reporting Live" into my car, blast it as loud as possible while driving down the beach. It's not COMPLETELY finished, but it's 99% there. And 23 musicians and 16 singers have never sounded so awesome. I know it's all I've been blogging about (granted I've blogged about 3 times in the past 4 months), but it's literally been a project I've been focusing on since August. And it's finally done. Well, close enough for me to say it's done. When you're working in theatre, you seldom get a final product that you can hold onto after the show's over. This album is the first time I can hold onto a final product and never let it go, and that's just pretty cool.

I just realized how many TV shows are on Netflix Instant View! I'm trying to decide between Dexter or Weeds. But I'm going to start one of them. Hopefully I'll get hooked, and with Michael C. Hall and Mary Louise Parker involved, that shouldn't be too hard.

After seeing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One, I became inspired to finish the books. I stopped towards the beginning of Book 5. But because it's been so long since I've read the first four I decided to start from scratch. So this afternoon I picked up the Sorcerer's Stone. Already halfway done. I forgot how damn good these books are. Not to mention the theme park at Universal is a religious experience for all.

I've missed my baby grand piano! All I've been doing since I came home to Florida is playing Pegasus all day and night. I forgot how good he sounds. For those of you who don't know, I tend to name all the pianos/keyboards I come in contact with (or at least develop a serious relationship with, and this one is very serious). My keyboard in New York is Icarus. My baby grand is Pegasus. The terrible piano I had to play in the Shop theater was named Al. You get the idea. But Pegasus is my one and only. The house my parents are building in Maryland is amazing, and do you know why? Because Pegasus might be getting his own room... So much damage to be done.

So many movies to see over the course of the next few weeks. True Grit, The King's Speech, I Love You Phillip Morris, Tron, Narnia, Blue Valentine, Rabbit Hole, The Fighter, The Tempest, Casino Jack, Somewhere, Another Year, Biutiful, etc... The list goes on. I just saw Black Swan yesterday. Completely took my breath away. As absurd it was, it still got my heart racing and Natalie Portman gave a performance that I feel like I've never seen before from any actor. Let this be the beginning of a good run of new movies. (PS - I still plan on seeing Burlesque without paying for the ticket.)

A lot of goals to meet over the next few weeks in Florida. I encourage all to come down for a visit. Who knows? Maybe a trip to Miami or Orlando could happen. God knows I'll be heading to both at some point.

Don't Ask Don't Tell

As I type this, I am watching the hearings regarding "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and it truly is fascinating to watch how these court hearings are handled and conducted.

In most controversial topics I find a sympathy and understanding for both sides, however for this particular issue I simply cannot wrap my brain around the reasonings for keeping the legislation intact.

Four Boys, One Messed Up Town: The Beauty of South Park

While "Six Feet Under" has been, and most likely will be for a long time, my favorite television series to have ever been aired, there's one show still on the air that holds a place near and dear to my heart. That is the ultimate brain child of Trey Parker and Matt Stone known as "South Park".



Now in the middle of its 14th season, "South Park" continues to display massive amounts of intelligence and original thought-provoking ideas. An episode that supports the ethics of capitalism? ("Gnomes") An episode that discusses gods existence in relation to karma? ("Cartmanland") An episode that compares chemically altered fast food products to marijuana? ("Medicinal Fried Chicken") An episode that encourages the Boy Scouts of America's right to prevent homosexual scout leaders? ("Cripple Fight") An episode that suggests destroying the rainforest?  ("Rainforest Schmainforest")

About 80% of the episodes they have aired ask such questions or make such clearly understood and focused opinions. The rainforest episode points out that the rainforest is the cause of thousands of deaths each year and is the instigator/catalyst for several fatal diseases. In result, it is easy to suggest that humans should not be destroying the rainforest. However, they point out that the rainforest tends to be destroying humans. Obviously their campaign against the rainforest is rather absurd, but they are pointing out some differing views that are hardly shared.



In the episode "Gnomes", the entire town of South Park is on a mission to drive out the new coffee chain, Harbucks. They spend much time discussing the importance of local coffee shops. However, at the very end, the town of South Park decides to try Harbucks coffee and discover that it tastes "much better than the crap" next door. Thus they realize Harbucks became so successful because so many people wanted that particular coffee; because it was good.

Here's a fascinating one. In the episode "Chef Goes Nanners", Chef goes on a passionate pursuit to change the South Park flag (the flag shows four white stick figures hanging one black stick figure, and in case you didn't know, Chef is black). The elementary children are assigned to have a debate on whether the flag should be unchanged due to its historical background and tradition, or if the flag should be altered because of its blatant racism. Stan and Kyle (two of the four main boys) are initially pro-Keep the flag the same, but after taking a closer look they switch sides. When making a public speech on behalf of the Pro-Change the Flag side, they discuss why it should be changed: killing is wrong. They never mention the words "black" or "white" in their speech. Chef then realizes that the children were so "unracist" that they didn't see a difference between black and white at all. Oh how quick we are to declare a label before we declare that we are human.


My point is that the creators of "South Park" initially became popular in its debut for its shocking imagery and language. When the series became more and more popular, Stone and Parker realized that they had an opportunity to truly create an intelligent conversation between themselves and a widespread audience. Thus they took a more intellectual route towards the end of its 2nd season with "Gnomes". Once the film, "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" premiered, (a film that Stephen Sondheim described as the greatest movie musical since "West Side Story") "South Park" declared itself as a stimulus for the brain and the gut that could not be reckoned with.



"South Park" follows the good folk who reside in the town in which the series is named after. It primarily follows four boys: Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick. Kenny is poor, sexually more knowledgeable, and yes, he tends to die every episode (for the first half of the series anyways). Stan is a leader, intelligent, and a romantic. Kyle is Jewish, morally responsible, and the voice of reason (he's become famous for saying, "You know, I learned something today..." at the end of each episode). And then there is Cartman. Cartman is a brilliant, manipulative, and absolutely heartless sociopath of the highest degree. There are also about a hundred other characters that prove to be alarming, hilarious, and fascinating (including and not limited to Mr. Garrison, Butters Stotch, Uncle Jimbo, Wendy Testaburger, Mr. Slave, Token, Craig, Clyde, Bebe, and of course all the parents of the town).  There are two two-part episodes that can truly sum up the artistic and humane integrity the show possesses and will continue to.



In season 10's "Cartoon Wars", the series began to identify itself as a show that has humor, and something to say. In the two-part episode, Eric Cartman plans an epic scheme to bring down the show "Family Guy" due to its "poor attempts of being funny without making any sense." Meanwhile, Kyle (the voice of reason) wants to keep "Family Guy" on the air. Kyle argues that it's a funny show and "doesn't get preachy and up its own ass with messages," a habit South Park practices frequently; this episode is no exception. "Family Guy" announces its plan to show an image of Muhammad, the Muslim prophet. Terrorists threaten the country and announce plans of potential retaliation if FOX were to air the episode. Kyle convinces the executives to continue to air the episode. Kyle points out that if this one religious group can't be poked fun at, then soon more and more groups are going to be considered the same, and it will reach the point in which nothing can be shown in a humorous or literal fashion. He says that, "either all of it's okay, or none of it is." That is South Park's credo. Everything is fair game, with a point of view.



NOTE: "South Park" has episodes discussing the nature of when something is appropriate or not appropriate on television. See the episode "Jared Has Aides" or the South Park film. Also, if you're frustrated with the "Everything is fair game" comment, see the episode "The Death Camp of Tolerance," in which tolerance is seen as an enormous threat. As you can see, I love this show.

The other two-parter happened last June, an episode that made minor television history. The series decided to celebrate its 200th episode by bringing back every celebrity they have ever shown on the series since it's inaugural episode, a number well over a hundred. The two episodes (appropriately titled "200" and "201") bring back several famous plotlines the show had endured. The ultimate story line became once more about the prophet "Muhammad" and the ethical nature of showing his image on the show (NOTE: South Park had actually shown an image of Muhammad in 2002. People seem to forget this.) After the first of the two episodes aired, something remarkable happened; Trey Parker and Matt Stone received actual threats from Al-Qaeda terrorists. There was much speculation on whether or not episode "201" would be aired. The episode was premiered, but Comedy Central not only bleeped out the image of Muhammad again, but also bleeped out a lengthy monologue given by Kyle at the end of the episode. At first glance, it felt like a funny joke regarding censorship. But in an interview, Stone and Parker revealed that Kyle's monologue was not meant to be censored; it was a speech about courage and not being intimidated. Stone and Parker stick to what they believe in; either all of it is okay, or none of it is. By the way, they have since caught the man who sent the threats to Comedy Central and the South Park creators and he has been linked to Al-Qaeda. It wasn't a fluke. Hard to blame Comedy Central, but one still can't feel bad for Stone, Parker, and Kyle Broflovski's potentially riveting speech.

South Park gets my salute. Of course there are episodes that make me angry. I don't always agree with what they are saying, but it doesn't mean I disrespect Stone and Parker in any immense degree. While I'm not a fan of "Red Hot Catholic Love" and its poor display of Catholic parishioners, it also works as a two way street. It points out the absolute lunacy of generalizing the Catholic church with pedophilia. I'm also angry by the episode "The Ring" in which they display the Disney corporation as a sexually geared company by using the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus (watching Mickey Mouse swear and beat up children is never enjoyable). But I don't lose respect for Stone and Parker. They're doing what artists should do. They express an idea, I don't agree with it. The conversation has been had, and now I don't watch those episodes any more. Doesn't mean that I can't watch the hundreds of other episodes. It's similar to that of a friend who shares similar ideologies with a few notable differences. You can argue with that friend and disagree with him, but it doesn't mean you're going to cut off the relationship entirely.

There are also images that I can't bear to watch without feeling nauseous (like "Medicinal Fried Chicken", "More Crap", and "Freak Strike") But again, I watch the episodes, understand what they're about, and then I move on.

While South Park is inevitably for the mind, I also can't forget how incredibly hilarious each episode can be. Parodies of famous films, actors, and television series are almost always creative and unique in their own right. "Le Petite Tourette" and "The List" are two of my personal favorites that just lets me laugh uproariously throughout an entire episode.

Nevertheless, South Park proves to be a series that makes me think something new, or a perspective I had never considered. In an episode paralleling the case of Terry Shaivo, Kenny is on life support. His parents want to keep him alive, and Cartman wants him dead so he can inherit Kenny's Playstation. The lawyer carrying Kenny's final will and testament reads "And in the event that I am kept on life support, please for the love of God..." but then he loses the next page. Thus a media storm breaks out with opposing sides arguing the ethical nature of the situation. At the end, the lawyer finds the missing page and completes the sentence. "...please for the love of God, do not show me in that condition on national television." Something I surprisingly never stopped to consider in the midst of the controversy.

Sometimes South Park isn't so subtle with their opinions. They'll make clear judgements without much room for critical thinking. They blatantly declare Scientology to be an enormous sham and unethical corporation. They believe that The Da Vinci Code is an absurd and mentally degrading piece of literature. They point out the incredibly repulsive acts of NAMBLA. That's why South Park is so mentally invigorating for me. It's a different conversation every episode, but always an intelligent one.



Now the series has returned to finish its 14th season. Tonight's episode compared the New Jersey culture that is on public display in series like "Jersey Shore", with that of Al-Qaeda terrorism. For the first time in a while, I was incredibly shocked by an episode with its image of terrorist driven planes (albeit no passengers in them) being used as weapons against the people of New Jersey in an epic battle. But silly of me to lose faith in this show. During the final 5 seconds of the episode, South Park slapped me across the face and basically exclaimed, "If we had to remove either New Jersey or Al-Qaeda, clearly terrorism is a priority." Just another reminder that things on both the top and the bottom of the list are all still on the list nonetheless.

I have no idea why I wanted to go into detail about my admiration, respect, and gratitude towards this series. There's a reason why philosophy professors have written books based on this incredible show. And unlike other outrageous comedy shows, "South Park" actually does have a heart. When Stan and Kyle's friendship pulls through, one can't help feel inspired and compassionate. I strangely... care... about these bizarre, bizarre people.  It makes me laugh. It makes me think. It makes me do both simultaneously in a very impactful way. What more could I ask for in a series?

As Kyle always says... "You know, I learned something today..."

Recording Live

This is starting to feel like the most massive undertaking I could have ever forced upon myself. Some things are set, some things are up in the air, somethings have yet to start. I feel as if everything is going according to plan, and yet there is a giant fear lodged deep in my subconcious that says this whole thing isn't going to happen. Well I'm going to make it happen bitches!

I've told some people, but the truth of the matter is that I'm recording "Reporting Live" this upcoming November/December. I'm having the recording done at Dubway Studios with a cast of 16 singers and (get this) an orchestra of approximately two dozen musicians.

How, you might ask?

I have no idea.

But it's going to happen. I've already recruited 95% of the cast and they are good to go. Dubway is giving me an astronomically low rate for their INCREDIBLE studio space that they JUST built in the Financial District. As for the orchestra, I have about 10 musicians set in stone. But the important instruments (like the enormous violin section) is still proving to be extremely troublesome. I'm emailing musicians every day, posting advertisements and listings all over the internet and Manhattan. Getting musicians is always troublesome when you're not paying them.

Still, the overwhelming support I'm getting from some musicians is incredible. It's just a shame that a lot of them play guitar.

My friend Zach Brown is orchestrating the entire show. Considering it's a musical with about 23 songs, and over 200 pages of piano sheet music, it's no small task. But he's doing an incredible job.

In case you don't know the show, here's the summary that I've been using so far:
Christine Chubbuck was a real-life television journalist from the early 1970’s. She was smart, attractive, young, and passionate about her work. However, in 1974, Christine made history by creating one of the most disturbing broadcasts ever seen on television. “Reporting Live” tells the astonishing true story of Christine while at the same time following Christine on a fictional journey in a land we have yet to discover. After she passes away, Christine wakes up in a desert with barely any sign of other people. However, she comes across an odd and lonely man who says he can help her. The two embark on an epic quest in a strange world for one reason: to find a way out.

I directed a full production at NYU last Spring and it was an incredible experience. I had brilliant actors, amazing designers, an incredible stage manager, musical director, and producer. And despite it's length, the show turned out to be pretty decent. Oh screw it. I was damn proud of the show. I know it needs work, but for what it was, I was incredibly proud.

So what now? Now I need to send the script/score to theater companies, producers, festivals, etc... But the most important component to all this work is the CD I send that has all of the music in the show. Most of the time, composers will send crappy records of people singing to a keyboard using GarageBand. But I don't want that. I want the real thing. I want people to listen to the CD and have the strongest sense of what this show can be.

I've heard some people tell me that a recording this massive is unnecessary. Does that bother me? Not at all. But a recording this massive is what I want. And it sure as hell can't hurt the show. This show, at least to me, feels epic. It goes back and forth in life and death, jumps around time, tells the biographical story of a real individual, and explores a fantastical world with rules that bend nature as we know it. And no, it's not 20 minutes long. I want producers to hear the REAL sound of the show, and for everyone to understand that this is in fact, a show to produce.

I'm really proud of this show. Other things I've worked on... not so much. But "Reporting Live" means a whole lot to me. Thus tons and tons and tons and tons of work is in store for this recording. It's going to happen. I'm making it happen. And with such incredible people helping me on this, it HAS to happen. And I can't wait.

"The rumors of my promiscuity have been greatly exaggerated," says Olive Penderghast, the latest high school girl to discuss her personal issues on the big screen. And frankly, I couldn't be more grateful for it.
I will not pretend to be an expert of high school comedies or coming-of-age films. I haven't seen as many as I might prefer. But it's always a rewarding experience when you see ANY film and by the end think to yourself, "This is a movie that people SHOULD see." And lately that seems to be popping up more and more.

"Easy A" is a film that chronicles the trials and tribulations of Olive Penderghast, a good girl with some self-esteem issues. After telling one little lie (maybe not that little), her life, as one would expect in a film such as this, is turned upside down. But there's something different about this premise. "Easy A" takes you carefully every step of the way as you observe Olive's decline. Towards the end of the movie, I had to ask myself, "How did we get to this point?" and then immediately conclude, "Oh, that's right." Not to mention the delectable Emma Stone contributes a very complicated, warm-hearted, and knockout performance as the sympathetic Olive.

But I don't want to talk about how wonderfully the film is technically crafted. During the movie, I couldn't help but believe that this is a relatively important film for people living in 2010. Rumors, gossip, bullying, etc... are nothing novel when it comes to high school comedies. But "Easy A" deals with these ideals on a very realistic level (and cleverly being realistic with some rather cartoonish characters).

First of all, there's the idea of rumors. I know, I know. Movies show how rumors and gossip spread at a rapid pace. They get distorted. It's a fast game of Telephone that is rarely treated as a game. But director Will Gluck doesn't simply show people whispering as the main character slowly walks down the hallway. He ACTUALLY shows the information being delivered from cell phone to cell phone to cell phone to cell phone (and we all know that one text message equals 4 people reading it when the receiver shares the information). And in a matter of 30 seconds, you have seen with your own eyes how an entire high school can hear about how person A slept with person B. In an actual matter of 30 seconds.

English teacher Mr. Griffith (played by a wonderful Thomas Hayden Church) makes a point to tell Olive that he's heard a few things. She retorts with a comment regarding teachers being in on the adolescent up-to-date gossip. Griffith simply replies, "I don't know what your generation's fascination is with documenting your every thought... but I can assure you, they're not all diamonds. 'Roman is having an OK day, and bought a Coke Zero at the gas station. Raise the roof.' Who gives a rat's ass?" But for some reason, hearing Church's way of saying this commonly mentioned thought feels different and more alarming after bearing witness to all of Olive's downfalls. The amount of information freely posted online and via text message is astounding. What's even more astounding is the pace and rate in which that information is communicated, shared, and commented on by all who read or listen.
Another fascinating topic this movie brings up (like most) is the idea of bullying. Nothing new. It exists. It's bad. But because of taking you through the very real process of Olive's actions and repercussions, the audience is able to spectate the very true effect in which an entire community scorns one individual. Like actual bullying, it's rather alarming. It did not even occur to me until the walk home that this story parallels heavily with the recent horrific event regarding Tyler Clementi. In case you've been under a rock or just a little out of the loop lately, Tyler Clementi was a closeted freshman at Rutgers. His roommate snuck a video camera into his room, video taped Clementi having sex with another man, and then posted the videos on facebook. Those videos immediately reached a large mass of viewers. The next day Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge. This only happened yesterday. And bullying has recently lead to several other deaths. While "Easy A" is not nearly as dramatic or tragic as these recent events, it still poses a tired construct from a new angle. Yes, it is a very funny movie. Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson offer extremely charismatic and enjoyable performances as Olive's shockingly cool and still nerdy at heart parents. The movie itself is inarguably a good time. Sure Woodchuck Todd might be too attractive for some skeptical movie goers. And yes, the painting of Jesus Freaks might seem unoriginal. But if you give it the opportunity, "Easy A" can not only make you laugh, but also be proud of who you are (corny, but it made me a believer) and it will make you celebrate the fact that a little privacy didn't hurt anybody. If there's anything I've learned from Gluck's wonderful comedy, it's the idea that what I do and who I am applies to me more than anyone else I know. And that is a highly liberating feeling, even if "John Hughes did not direct my life."
